IMAGE ANALYSIS STANDARDS


 
Particle size analysis by laser diffraction has become a significant analytical tool for sizing up to about 2mm and has made major inroads into sieve analysis methods over the last 10 years.  For sizes of 10mm and above however, sieving is still very widely employed.  This position is also now becoming eroded by the introduction over the last few years of automated image analysis methods.  The principle of the technique is to simply drop the particles to be measured past a high speed video camera and use a computer to analyse the images.  As the number of particles per unit weight rapidly declines as size increases, much larger weights are required to ensure that the analytical data is statistically robust.  

Whitehouse Scientific has an ongoing programme to produce NIST traceable polydisperse standards for this application.  Large spinning rifflers are used to ensure that there is minimal deviation from sample to sample.   Particle sizes are measured by highly accurate electroformed sieves traceable to NIST standards of length.
