Filter Cut Point Testing

Our most popular test is our Filter Cut Point or 'Challenge Test'. Performed dry, glass microspheres are fluidised by a Sonic sifting action, challenging the filter to provide the d97%.

Our Requirements:
Samples must have an estimated cut point of between 20 and 600 microns.  We require 90mm flat circular discs in order to perform the test (if possible, please send 2 samples per test.  This is simply to ensure a good set up)

Please label your samples clearly - Whatever you label your samples with will be referenced on your certificate. Ideally send your samples sealed in a labelled plastic bag.  Also, if possible, please indicate an estimated nominal pore size for each sample.

Results are returned as a PDF NIST Traceable Certificate via email within 5 days of our receiving your samples.

FILTER THICKNESS MEASUREMENT
Thickness measurements over 5 random areas are determined on a single filter
Example uncertainty @ 250µm = ±2%

AIR PERMEABILITY
5 measurements are determined on a single filter of 2.5cm diameter (5cm² area) or 5cm diameter (20cm² area).
Test Pressure: 20 – 500 Pa.
Measuring accuracy: ±3% of displayed value.
Textest Test Certificate is provided. 
Filter samples must be at least 5cm or 8cm in diameter and be clean/decontaminated before submission.

DIRECT MEASUREMENT BY IMAGE ANALYSIS
Apertures on a single filter are measured in both X and Y directions by PoreSizer™ using transmitted light. 
Size range 3 –2000µm Example uncertainty for a 5µm mesh = ±3%

All filters must be clean and decontaminated before submission.

FILTER CUT-POINT (DRY CHALLENGE TEST) MEASUREMENT
Glass reference microspheres are fluidised by Sonic sifting action over a single 90mm diameter filter. 
Gravimetric interpolation method employed equates to the Cut Point. 
Size range 20 –5000µm Example uncertainty for a 125µm mesh = ±4µm 
NIST traceable Test Certificate supplied.

FILTER CUT-POINT (WET CHALLENGE TEST) MEASUREMENT
An aqueous suspension of glass reference microspheres fluidised by ultrasonic action over a single filter 
A minimum filter diameter of 90mm is required.
Particles penetrating the filter are analysed by PoreSizer™ todetermine the d97, Cut Point.
Size range 3 to typically 100µm Example uncertainty for a 15µm mesh = ±0.6µm
NIST traceable Test Certificate supplied. 
All filters must be clean and decontaminated before submission.

MAXIMUM PORE SIZE BY PENETRATING GLASS MICROSPHERES (d99.5)
Appropriately sized certified glass reference microspheres are fluidised by either wet ultrasonic or dry sonic action over a 50mmdiameter filter (wet) or 90mm diameter filter (dry).  
At least 250 beads passing through the filter are counted and measured by microscopy (PoreSizer™). 
5 repeat determinations of at least 250 beads are performed on a single filter. 
Maximum pore size is measured at d99.5. 
The d97 and an estimated d100 result is also included. 
Example uncertainty for a typical 200µm mesh (d99.5) = ±8% 
Size range 3 – 500µm

SAND SCREENS. MAXIMUM PASSING PARTICLE
Based on Annex D of ANSI/API Specification 19S and ISO 17824
Appropriately sized certified glass reference microspheres are fluidised by either wet ultrasonic or dry sonic action over a50mm diameter filter (wet) or 90mm diameter filter (dry).  
5 tests of at least 250 beads passing through the filter are counted and the largest particle passing (d100) is measured by microscopy (PoreSizer™). 
The largest particle from each of the 5 tests is recorded. 
Example uncertainty for a typical 200µm mesh has been proven to be as large as ±47%. 
Size range 3 – 500µm
